I buy a lot of chicken and fish in bulk from a frozen food store (Farmfoods) as well as canned tuna. It does require a little extra planning around meal times, having to think about defrost times, but it really makes a difference in cost.”

Tip #2: Lidl price, great value

LCP community member: Carmen McKelvie

“If you are looking to do low-carb on a budget, and you have a Lidl near you, then their full fat Greek yogurt, extra thick double cream, butter, eggs, meat, fish, cheeses, veg, nuts and berries are much cheaper than other shops. They also do a high-protein roll in the bakery section that has around 10g carbs, for an occasional treat.”

Tip #3: Buy in bulk

LCP community member: Jack Wa

“Buy end of date, cheap meat; bulk olive oil is good and is cheap; make stews and casseroles and use the freezer. I use tinned tomatoes a lot and buy in bulk when there are discounts. Dry beans, peas and lentils are also cheap, but you need to count the carbs more.”

Tip #4: Track cheap high-protein sources

LCP community member: Ana Dunlop

“I think it will just take a while to get used to it. I have been using a lot of tinned fish and chick peas as a good source of cheap, simple and high protein source. In fact, my lunch for the last week was mainly half a chopped cucumber, 1 large tomato chopped up, and a tin of chick peas or mackerel, drizzled with olive oil and a pinch of sea salt – yummy and thoroughly satisfying!”

Tip #5: Season of good cheer

LCP community member: Helen Davies

“Frozen berries are a good alternative to fresh berries, and much cheaper. I find them useful for breakfast with oats and yoghurt. They are picked in season and often have a better taste than fresh from the supermarket. Lidl do a good mixed bag.”

We hope you’ve enjoyed our Eating low-carb on a budget series.
