Whatever your reason for going to the nearest coffee house, one thing is certain: we Brits love our coffee. And yet, frequenting your local Starbucks can be somewhat of a hardship whilst eating low carb. But never fear, that hardship is about to set sail. Whatever your drink of choice is, our low carb coffeehouse guide will help you sail away to caffeine-heaven.

Drinks to stay away from

Of course, there are some drinks which you should avoid at all costs. These are thought of less as coffee drinks and more like desserts in a cup. You know what I’m talking about – any drink that has a piece of chocolate, biscuit or a marshmallow sitting in it isn’t so much a drink as it is hyperglycemia waiting to happen.

Frappuccino

Despite being popular with handlebar moustached hipsters worldwide, Frappuccino’s are hands down one of the most health-damaging drinks you can buy. A quick look on the Starbucks website notes that some of their Fraps have more than 60 grams of sugar per serving. This is a whopping amount of sugar, more than you’d find in half a litre of coke. Even finding a version using sugar-free syrup, the chances are the sugar content from the milk and other flavourings will be high.

If you can’t manage to end your love affair with Frappuccino’s then at least try to make the relationship healthier. According to the Starbucks website, the only Frap that has close to normal sugar levels is the Mini- almond milk-coffee Frappuccino. However, this still packs a considerable amount of sugar at 12 grams per serving. It’s best to save this as a treat very rare treat.

Mocha

Another major offender is the Mocha. With the Grande oat milk white chocolate mocha tipping the scale at 63 grams of carbs, of which 47 grams are sugar. This amount of sugar in one sitting is incredibly unhealthy, even for people without prior health conditions. Of course, the majority of this extra sugar comes from the chocolate syrup or powder that is used.

Unfortunately, there do not seem to be any Mochas on the Starbucks website with less than 17 grams of sugar per serving. Sadly, there’s no salvaging this relationship, Mocha has to go!

Hot chocolate

Thought of as the more relaxed child-friendly version of the Mocha, the hot chocolate is a winter staple for families in the UK. That being said, if you want your children to sleep, it might be best to not let them have one. The Starbucks Grande skimmed-milk signature hot chocolate contains over 50 grams of carbs of which 43 grams are sugar. With children aged 5-10 advised to eat less than 85 grams of sugar per day, getting such a massive hit of sugar in one sitting is anything but healthy.

Although I don’t expect to be buying my children Starbucks hot chocolates any time soon, the best option in terms of sugar and carb content would be the Short-Almond Classic hot chocolate which contains 20 grams of carbs, 16 of which are sugar.

Tea

Although assumed to be relatively innocuous when it comes to sugar, some teas are much higher in sugar than others. For instance, any of the tea lattes at Starbucks are full of the sweet white stuff, with the Venti oat milk Chai tea Latte topping the list at 72 grams of carbs, 60 grams of which are sugar.

Safe options

Fortunately, tea lattes are the only tea-based offenders. If you’re going for any manner of normal teas including the English Breakfast Tea, Earl Grey Tea, Hibiscus Tea, Emperor’s Clouds & Mist Tea, Mint Citrus Green Tea, Mint Blend Tea, Youthberry Tea, Jasmine Pearls Tea, Chai Tea (not to be confused with the Chai tea latte) or Chamomile Tea, the sugar and carb content is zero until you add sugar and milk. The Soy and almond milk are the best options, containing only 5.7 grams of sugar per serving.

If iced tea is your beverage of choice, there may be some confusion when you order. All of the iced teas come in a “natural” and “Lemonade” version. The natural version is carb and sugar-free, whereas the lemonade versions contain upwards of 13 grams of sugar. It might be best to check the barista knows which version you want, so they don’t just give you the sugary version.

Any type of fresh filter coffee is void of carbs and sugar. If you want to add milk, soy or almond milk are the lowest in carbs and sugar. Solo and doppio espressos are also carb free, as is Espresso macchiato, espresso con panna and café Americano.

Of course, another option would be boycotting the coffee shop completely and constructing your own coffee creation.

For more info on hot drinks, why not check out our hot drink resources here and here.

‘Wanna grab a coffee?’ Those four little words can be the elixir to your hangover, comfort in times of hardship, or even romance in the face of monotony.
