It typically focuses on the consumption of different seasonal fruits and vegetables, but can also include choosing certain types of in-season meat and seafood.

Eating with the seasons was the norm in the past but today we are very much used to having the same produce available all year round. We can now easily buy foods like tomatoes and berries in the middle of winter, and get tropical fruits like bananas, mangoes and avocados at any time of the year. Indeed, we are spoilt for choice. Unfortunately, by rarely choosing seasonal and locally grown fruits and vegetables, we may be missing out on some important benefits. In this article, we will be discussing the advantages that eating seasonally can bring.

1. You get more nutrients

Most produce found in supermarkets is imported from suppliers from all over the world. As seasons vary throughout the year in different hemispheres, we can get foods like tomatoes, asparagus and courgette all year round. There are some fruits and vegetables which may have been grown locally and, if stored in proper conditions, have a very long shelf-life.

Unfortunately, once the fruits and vegetables are picked, they start to lose some of their key nutrients, such as vitamin C. This means that foods which have travelled long distances or ones that have been stored for a long time are less nutritious than recently harvested produce. Some fruits in supermarkets are also picked before they fully ripen, which prevents them from obtaining all the nutrients from the parent plant. Therefore, it is a good idea to choose seasonal fruits and vegetables to ensure we are getting plenty of nutrients. For out-of-season produce, buying frozen varieties can be more beneficial, as they are typically frozen at peak freshness and retain their nutritional value.

2. It tastes better

Ever wonder why tomatoes are so flavourful in the summer? Or why do butternut squash and brussels sprouts taste so good in autumn and winter? It’s all because fruits and vegetables are the most flavourful when they’re at their freshest.

When we eat seasonally, we get produce that is of the very highest quality. That is why so many chefs focus on locally grown seasonal foods – they know it makes a big difference to how our food tastes. A lot of the time we may think we don’t like certain fruits and vegetables, but we may be surprised how different they taste when they are in season.

Once you start eating more seasonally, you may find yourself getting more excited to try out new recipes that you know will taste better at different times of the year. Why not take a look at our recipe system and search for foods containing your favourite seasonal ingredients?

3. It’s better for the environment

Greenhouse gas emissions are a major threat to the future of our planet, and we should all be aiming to reduce our carbon footprint where we can. Why not consider minimizing the amount of imported foods in our diet and eating more locally? Reducing CO2 emissions from the transportation of fruits and vegetables, especially those shipped from the other side of the world, is one way we can develop more sustainable dietary patterns. We should treat foods like bananas, mangoes and avocados as luxuries rather than something that makes up the majority of our diet. Instead, why not celebrate all the wonderful produce our regions have to offer?

4. You’re supporting local farmers

By eating seasonally and locally, we can support the local farmers in our area and choose to back more sustainable agricultural practices. You may find yourself feeling more connected with where your food comes from and have greater respect for the effort put into its production. Supporting local food production also brings economic benefits to local businesses such as restaurants and cafes, so by eating locally you can help improve the quality of life in your community.

5. It can save you money

If we’re constantly buying produce that is not in season, our grocery costs can quickly add up.
