Mark Hancock reversed his type 2 diabetes with low carb
Mark Hancock was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in August 2010, although he had been struggling to manage his blood sugar levels for some years before.
“I knew that I’d put on some weight, but it was still a shock and it was frightening to think of the complications that might happen. I remember at the time worrying about what food I could and couldn’t eat.”
His diabetic nurse showed him the ‘EatWell Guide’ and whilst he did lose weight initially, his blood sugars crept up and he was eventually prescribed metformin. Mark’s turning point came when he heard a doctor on the radio discussing that many of his patients had managed to reverse their type 2 diabetes through cutting out carbs. So, he decided to switch to low carb and has seen some fantastic results.
“My energy levels are incredible, I don’t feel the need to have a mid-afternoon nap anymore. Over the 8 weeks I also lost a stone and a half, coming down from 88.4kg (13st 13 lbs) to 78.5kg (12st 5 lbs) . My HbA1c had gone down to 42mmol/mol (5%) within a month of making the changes and remained stable every time I had it checked.”
Mark is an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration and recently spoke as a patient representative at parliament alongside Dr. David Unwin about reversing type 2 diabetes. He also spoke at the 2016 and 2017 Annual Diabetic Conference and helps to run a low carb support group for patients with type 2 diabetes.
