Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week - our Low Carb Champions
This week is Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week, a campaign that aims to raise awareness of type 2 diabetes and provide information on how you can reduce your risk.
As part of the campaign, we wanted to share the success of some of our Low Carb Champions, who have successfully reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, by adopting a low carb lifestyle.
Dave Daffin
Dave was referred to a diabetes nurse after a blood test revealed his blood sugars were within the prediabetes range. He was given the standard ‘eat less, move more’ advice to lose weight but was also given a leaflet for the Diabetes Digital Media website, which is where he came across the Low Carb Program. Dave has since lost 25.4kg (4st) and an incredible 10 inches off his waist!
“I think really the motivation was that I didn’t want to get type 2 diabetes and I wanted to stay healthy…I don’t think of it as a diet, I see it as a lifestyle change”
Bernard Olsburgh
Bernard was a family GP who ran diabetes clinics in his practice. After being diagnosed with prediabetes and high blood pressure, he was prescribed statins. With the help of the Low Carb Program, Bernard has lost 12kg and put his prediabetes into remission, on top of that his blood pressure has normalised, dropping from 140/85 mmHg to 120/70 mmHg. Bernard says he now eats a diet that he loves and has never felt healthier.
Ann Holloway
When Ann received the results from her annual review, she was told by her nurse that her blood sugars were within the prediabetes range and was recommended to look at the Diabetes Digital Media website. For Ann, type 2 diabetes ran in the family, so she knew that if she didn’t change her eating habits, she was at risk of being diagnosed. Ann now sticks to between 50-70g of carbs per day and has managed to gain control over her blood sugars. She says she has a lot more energy and doesn’t get as tired or sluggish as she once did.
Jayne Welsh
Since retiring, Jayne had led a very active lifestyle, but when she started losing weight and becoming tired, she knew something was wrong. A blood test revealed that her blood sugars were within the prediabetes range, so she started to research online how she could reduce her risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Joining the Low Carb Program gave her confidence in her decisions as she cut out sugar and reduced her carb intake. Since adopting a low carb approach, Jayne says she’s no longer tired, has better quality sleep and now feels fitter and healthier than she has for years.
Anne Pollock
After taking a glucose tolerance test, Anne Pollock was shocked to discover she was at risk of type 2 diabetes. Anne had never been overweight and primarily followed a Mediterranean diet. A colleague then recommended that she joined the Low Carb Program and she’s since seen some fantastic improvements in her health.
