5 healthy habits to adopt in 2020

Published on 24th May, 2022

Why not make 2020 the year that you prioritise your health and wellbeing? To get you started, here are some examples of healthy habits which you may find helpful to adopt:

Self-care

Many of us are guilty of prioritising the needs of others over our own. But maybe 2020 is the year that we give ourselves a bit more TLC. Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and face masks – it’s about making choices that will benefit our mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. This could be anything from attending regular health appointments to taking up a new hobby to boost our mood

Be alcohol aware

While the program doesn’t suggest that you abstain from alcohol completely, being aware of the effect alcohol has on the body and the carb contents of different alcoholic drinks can make it easier to stay on track and achieve your goals. For example, it might be worth acknowledging that alcohol metabolism momentarily halts fat burning, and stimulates hunger, so it may affect our weight loss goals. Some alcoholic drinks can also be high in carbs.

Practice mindful eating

Busy lifestyles mean that many of us can get used to eating at our desks, while watching the TV, or even while on the move. This can mean that we’re not paying attention to what we’re eating. Unconscious eating can lead to overeating, digestive problems and an overall negative relationship with food. Mindful eating, on the other hand, involves listening to the body’s own hunger cues and setting aside time to focus your attention on what you’re eating.

Set goals

Setting yourself goals for the new year is a great way to stay motivated and achieving small goals along the way can help to increase self-confidence. These may be goals relating to your health, career, finances or personal life for example. Making a habit of reminding yourself of these goals, and your progress towards them, can then be a great way to stay on track.

Assess your sleep quality

Sleep is essential for many reasons such as allowing our body time to restore and repair tissues and helping to flush out waste from the brain, thus preventing the risk of brain disorders. However, many of us don’t receive good quality, which can leave us feeling tired and sluggish during the day. If you find that you’ve been struggling to get good sleep, you could try and implement steps which will help optimise sleep such as reducing your caffeine intake.
