7 positivity hacks to boost your mood

7 positivity hacks to boost your mood

Published on 12th Jun, 2022

What do you do when you’re having a bad day? We all can feel blue from time to time but there are a few things you can do to help nudge your mind to a more positive state.

Here are 7 hacks to try out to lift your mood:

1) Practice gratitude

Did we really have a bad day, or were there just a few bad moments? Writing down things that have happened that we’re grateful for can help shift our way of thinking to be more open and positive. At the end of each day try and write down three things that you’re grateful for, no matter how small they seem. It could be that you watched a favourite TV programme, or you were able to tick something off your to-do list.

2) Remember that your thoughts are not facts

We’re all guilty of getting stuck in a rut from time to time, we might doubt our ability or worry about what others are thinking. Our thoughts drive what we do and how we feel, but it’s important to remember that our thoughts are not facts. Next time you feel yourself worrying or being doubtful, take a step back and try and challenge the thought. What evidence is there to say it’s true? Are there other possible outcomes or reasons something turned out differently than you hoped?

3) Stay in the present

Many of us are stuck on ‘autopilot,’ we might be thinking about the past or worrying about the future and not thinking about what we’re doing in the present moment. But the only thing we can change is the present. Next time you recognise that you’re having an unhelpful thinking pattern try shifting your attention to see if you feel calmer and more in control.

4) Speak to friends and family

Busy schedules can often make it difficult to keep in touch with friends and family, but maintaining relationships are important for feeling supported and keeping a positive mood. Whether it be through text messaging, a phone call or social media, try and chat whenever you can.

5) Ease the pressure to be perfect

We face enough stress in our lives without putting any extra pressure on ourselves. While its good to aim high, its also important to recognise when we should be a bit easier on ourselves. Everyone makes mistakes and nobody is perfect. By changing our goal from ‘being perfect’ to ‘trying our best’ we can ease stress and help to maintain a good mood. Reminding ourselves of our achievements can also help us to think more positively.

6) Think about your goals

Setting ourselves goals can help us to feel more positive and motivated for the future. It can also be a big confidence boost when we accomplish what we wanted to achieve. They don’t necessarily need to be big goals, even creating a to-do list for the day can help you feel more calmer and in control.

7) Get out for a walk

As well as working wonders for your physical health, there are several mood boosting chemicals that are released when we exercise. Getting out for a walk can also help to take our mind off any worries or concerns we have and think more clearly.
