When Valerie Humphreys was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, she was told that she needed to eat carbs with every meal to keep her blood sugar levels stable. She was also put on metformin.

“My GP didn’t really give me much advice about it [type 2 diabetes], so I decided to look online. That’s when I found the Diabetes Digital Media website and, from there, the Low Carb Program.”

Valerie admits that at the beginning, it took her a while to adjust to the changes. She was eating smaller portions of high carb foods but found that her blood sugar levels were still high.

“I was trying to find ways to eat the same diet, but it didn’t work, I had to change my mindset”

Valerie started experimenting with recipes and swapped high carb foods for low carb substitutions. Since making the changes she’s lost 11.3kg (1st 11lbs) and her blood sugar levels are now in normal range.

“My son-in-law was diagnosed with diabetes this year. Through me, he’s much more aware about carbohydrates and has tried to cut down. He’s lost about 28.6kg (4st 7lbs) so far.”
